Personally, I think Burton's talented, but his adaptations of popular stories seem to lack something.

his best work is not in his adaptations. agreed.
My favorite of his was Big Fish, which was technically an adaptation of a novel, but not of something popular. If he goes with projects like that more often, I think he would be more successful.
